Karnes County Country Club

Located two miles south of Kenedy on State Highway 181, the Karnes County Country Club features a unique nine hole golf course and swimming pool.

golf.jpg (55841 bytes)Originally built in the late 1920's, the Karnes County Country Club golf course offers a delightful yet challenging place to golf. Built on a 160 acre, mesquite covered and partial hillside tract, KCCC is open to the public with annual memberships available. Golf cart sheds are also available for those who own their carts and walkers are welcome.

KCCC members may take advantage of the swimming pool from late April to late September.

 

Hunting and Fishing

Dove

Because of the rich farm land in Karnes County, with abundant cultivated fields of milo and corn,   Karnes County has traditionallygraphics/smdove.jpg (53675 bytes) been a hot spot for dove hunting.  There are many leases throughout the area, and five public dove hunting leases in Karnes County.

State Parks

Choke Canyon State Park/South Shore

(Although not in Karnes County, it is right next door, within easy driving distance.)

Park Activities:

Camping, picnicking, boating, hiking, wildlife viewing, birding, fishing, lake beach and pool (during summer months) swimming, and softball and volleyball areas.

Park Tours/Clinics:

Guided Birding Tours, Fishing Clinic for children.

Park Facilities:

Shaded picnic sites on the lake; outside rinse-off showers in the day-use area; restrooms with showers; campsites with water and electricity; walk-in campsites with water in the area; group picnic pavilions; a group picnic pavilion with overnight campground; a concession stand (seasonal); a .25-mile hiking trail; a .25 birding trail; a trailer dump station; baseball and volleyball areas; a 6-lane boat ramp and an auxiliary 2-lane boat ramp; a canoe/boat launch; a fishing platform; lighted fish-cleaning tables;buck1.jpg (10604 bytes)overlook shelters; playgrounds.

Wildlife/Fishing

Choke Canyon is the western-most common occurrence of the American alligator. Rio Grande turkey, whitetail deer, javelina, coyote, opossum, fox squirrel, raccoon, and various skunks are among the most common animals. The crested caracara (Mexican eagle) can also be seen in the area. The following fish are in the reservoir: largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, white crappie, bluegill, longear sunfish, green sunfish, flathead, channel and blue catfish, carp, freshwater drum, and gar.

Coleto Creek Park/Goliad

190 acre park and 3,100 acre reservoir created as a cooling water facility for a 570 megawatt coal-fired electricity generating plant.

Park Facilities

200-ft.  lighted fishing pier, camper and tent sites, electricity available on some sites, dump station, flush toilets, hot/cold showers, grills, 1-1/2 miles of nature trails, 4 lane boat ramp, washer/dryer. (2) 4-person camping cabins are available. Group pavilion available for reunions, large gatherings.

Park Activities

Swimming, fishing, bird-watching. Coleto Creek is a designated Texas Coastal Birding Trail site.

Wildlife/Fishing

Large-mouth bass, crappie, and catfish, stocking has introduced Florida and hybrid striped bass, catfish, and copper-nosed blue gill perch.

Goliad/Fannin Area

Easily a 1 tank get-away!

The Goliad/Fannin area is a rich Texas Historical area with many of the original Spanish Missions still in existence. In addition to Coleto Creek Park are:

  • Fannin Plaza:Texas Revolution cannon, memorial shaft and several historical
    markers. Nearby is "hanging tree" on courthouse lawn, and Market House Museum

  • General Zaragoza State Historical Site: Both a State Park and a Historical Site, this is the birthplace of one of Mexico's most famous leaders, General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862).

  • Goliad State Park: 2,208 acre park featuring the restored Mission Espiritu Santo. Picnic areas, camping, restrooms. The San Antonio River runs through this park, and fishing is allowed. Admission.

  • Presidio La Bahia: Built as a fort to protect the Spanish Missions, the La Bahia Chapel is still used today. Museum, admission.

 

Museums

Courthouse Museum (Helena)

Helena's abandoned courthouse is now a museum of area history with early trail, ranch and home artifacts, tools and implements. Upstairs area features early courtroom setting. Schoolroom setting recalls days when building was used as a school, 1894 - 1945.

Panna Maria Visitor's Center (Panna Maria)

Administered by the Panna Maria Historical Society, the center is housed in the 1875 Pliarczyk Store. Souvenirs, handmade crafts, religious articles, local foods, as well as information and guided tours are available.

St. Joseph School Museum (Panna Maria)

Housed in the oldest Polish school in the U.S.; artifacts (many from 19th-Century Poland) depicting life of Polish pioneers. Second floor, originally a convent for the teaching nuns, is now a bed and breakfast.

Museum open Thurs. - Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sun. 2 - 5 p.m.
